Music: Noise pop mavens Procedure Club play Thurs., May 4, at 8 PM

Procedure Club at Lyric Hall March, 2017.

Noise pop band Procedure Club returns to Best Video Film & Cultural Center on Thursday, May 4. The tunes start at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover.

Procedure Club is a band from New Haven.  They formed in 2007, and had releases on Slumberland Records, Sixteen Tamborines (Japan), and Beko Disques (France) and others. The current lineup features Adam, Andrea, Tim, Wes, and Kyle.

Their most recent record, “Pinky Swear,” was released on Safety Meeting Records in August, 2016. “Pinky Swear” is Procedure Club’s follow up to their Slumberland Records release, “Doomed Forever.” With undercurrents of haunting airiness and mechanical instability, Procedure Club’s latest work is like a ghost driving the Beast Of Turin through a hailstorm. The song structures consist of heavily reverbed melodic vocals, stuttering mechanized drum beats, dirty bass, synths, and alternately washed-out and jangly guitars.

Sharing a fondness for the noisy shoegazers and gentle C-86 artists, Adam Malec and Andrea Belair formed Procedure Club in New Haven, CT in December of 2007. After self-releasing a limited run of CD-Rs and cassettes — lo-fi bedroom recordings of bass, drum machines, and guitar fuzz, all topped with Andrea’s sweet, airy vocals — the duo posted a free-to-download album on BEKO DSL and a 7” titled Slut Fossil on Sixteen Tambourines. In 2010, the duo was signed to Slumberland Records (home of similar-minded artists Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Black Tambourine, and the Lodger) and Malec and Belair started laying the groundwork for their first official album.

Film/Lecture: Thomas Wexler presents a screening and talkback on “‘I Have a Dream:’ The Civil Rights Generation, and Hip-Hop in the Social Unconscious” Wed., May 3

Thomas Wexler, M.A. American Studies, Bowling Green State University presents a screening and talkback on Wednesday, May 3, at 7 PM entitled “‘I Have a Dream’: The Civil Rights Generation, and Hip-Hop in the Social Unconscious.” This event is free.
Following the film, a talkback session will be held exploring contradictions, and distinctions between the Civil Rights Generation, and Hip-Hop culture. The film features Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech as well as freestyle rap selections by Biggie Smalls and the Notorious B.I.G.
Discussion will focus on “The Art of the Freestyle.”  “Freestyle,” and “Freestyling” as a buzzword in today’s Hip-Hop culture, and the various contexts in which “Freestyle” performance should historically be interpreted as part of politically motivated Hip-Hop “Struggle,” or activism.

Film screening: Gen X series continues with Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” Sun., Apr. 30

Best Video Film & Cultural Center’s Generation X film series continues on Sunday, Apr. 30, with a screening of Spike Lee’s 1989 film “Do the Right Thing.” The series features six films of the 1980s and early 1990s that touch on the culture and politics that informed so-called “Generation X.” The screening is at 7 PM and admission is $7.

An instant critical and commercial success, Spike Lee’s third major film chronicles a single sweltering day in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn. Lee stars as Mookie, a delivery man working for Sal’s Pizzeria, a white-owned business in the center of the black neighborhood. When Sal (Danny Aiello, who received an Oscar nomination for the role) gets into an argument with Mookie’s best friend, the neighborhood’s long-simmering racial tensions erupt. Billed as a comedy-drama, the film is indeed funny, even as it explores the complexity, frustration and tragedy the film’s characters experience. As relevant today as it was nearly thirty years ago for its unflinching yet empathetic portrayal of race relations, the star-studded cast of “Do the Right Thing” includes John Turturro as Sal’s antagonistic son, and Rosie Perez (in her screen debut) as Mookie’s girlfriend.

From Vincent Canby’s 1989 New York Times review [requires log-in]:

In all of the earnest, solemn, humorless discussions about the social and political implications of Spike Lee’s ”Do the Right Thing,” an essential fact tends to be overlooked: it is one terrific movie. From the sinuous and joshing solo dance sequence, which begins the fable on the dawn of the hottest day of the summer in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant section, until the mournful fadeout 24 hours later, ”Do the Right Thing” is living, breathing, riveting proof of the arrival of an abundantly gifted new talent.

Music: GuitarTownCT presents The Slocan Ramblers Fri., Apr. 28, at 7:30

GuitarTownCT Concert Series presents The Slocan Rambers Friday, Apr. 28, at Best Video Performance Space. Tickets are $20 and are available through GuitarTownCT.

The Slocan Ramblers are Canada’s young bluegrass band to watch. Rooted in tradition, fearlessly creative and possessing a bold, dynamic sound, The Slocans have quickly become a leading light of Canada’s roots music scene. With a reputation for energetic live shows, impeccable musicianship and an uncanny ability to convert anyone within earshot into a lifelong fan, The Slocans understand that if you polish up the music, you lose the raw excitement that makes it so vibrant.

On their sophomore album Coffee Creek (2015), The Slocan Ramblers blend lightning fast and devilishly intricate instrumentals with sawdust-thick vocals. In the liner notes, producer Chris Coole breaks it down: “What really impressed me while we were working on this album, was that, while they can pull off the precision and virtuosity that is at the backbone of bluegrass, they understand the power of the fragile moment in music.” On Coffee Creek, they’ve done this by staying true to the rough and rowdy roots of the music.

Music: Zach Andersen, The Hooch play Thurs., Apr. 27

Singer-songwriter Zach Andersen and acoustic duo The Hooch play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Apr. 27. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Zach Anderson

After breaking his neck, all Zach Andersen could do during the recuperation process was play video games and learn to play guitar. Once he was all healed, he jokingly thought it would be fun to write his own songs. A few minutes later, this joke turned into a new passion and the formation of The Andersen Brothers (or something like that). Along with his brother, Eric, Zach took the local music scene by storm with their catchy, relatable and nostalgic songs. Their first album, “Unrequited Daze”, was released in 2011 and contained crowd favorite “However Hard She Tries” and several other TAB classics. While TAB is on hiatus, Zach continues to play both solo shows as well as gigs with his other band, “The Or Something Like Thats” (or whatever he decides to call them on any given night). Check out ZachAndersenMusic.com for more information, lyrics, set lists, videos, and so much more!

The Hooch

The Hooch was formed in 2013 when its members, Jemar Phoenix and Mike D, were introduced to each other during a “live music” Open Mic event in New Haven, CT. What began as a simple “Hey, can you play percussion during this set?” eventually morphed into a brotherly chemistry syncopated like no other. Since then, The Hooch has been ascending, playing venues throughout the Metro Northeast, and impressing their audiences with their dynamic sound.

Film screening: Gen X film series continues Sun., Apr. 23, with David Lynch’s creepy “Blue Velvet”

Best Video Film & Cultural Center’s Generation X film series continues on Sunday, Apr. 23, with a screening of David Lynch’s cult classic “Blue Velvet.” The series features six films of the 1980s and early 1990s that touch on the culture and politics that informed so-called “Generation X.”

The series was the idea of BVFCC members Jennifer Griffiths and Sarah Strong. Working with BVFCC Program Director Hank Hoffman, they crafted a program that will both highly entertaining and thought provoking.

Each screening begins at 7 PM and admission is $7.

In Blue Velvet, David Lynch peels back the veneer of small-town respectability to expose a shadow side of the Amerian psyche. Released in 1986 at the height of government attempts to outlaw sexually explicit material, Blue Velvet’s unflinching portrayal of erotic taboos and violence created an uproar. Kyle McLachlan and Laura Dern are the young innocents who stumble upon a disturbing mystery; Isabella Rosselini is the nightclub singer at its center. Dennis Hopper is unforgettable as Frank, a sociopath with an Oedipus complex. Ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the ten greatest mystery films ever made, this cult classic shows Lynch at his most noirish and disturbing best.

From New York Times critic Janet Maslin’s 1986 review:

Other directors labor long and hard to achieve the fevered perversity that comes so naturally to David Lynch, whose ”Blue Velvet” is an instant cult classic. With ”Eraserhead,” ”The Elephant Man” and ”Dune” to his credit, Mr. Lynch had already established his beachhead inside the realm of the bizarre, but this latest venture takes him a lot further. Kinkiness is its salient quality, but ”Blue Velvet” has deadpan humor too, as well as a straight-arrow side that makes its eccentricity all the crazier. There’s no mistaking the exhilarating fact that it’s one of a kind.

Music: Allen Lowe & The Fake Music Ensemble play suite jazz Sat., Apr. 22

Jazz saxophonist and composer Allen Lowe returns to Best Video Performance Space this Saturday, Apr. 22, for a show featuring compositions from two suites he has been working on. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $10.

“Black Brown and Beige, Yellow Trans and Queer: My Country ‘Tis of This” is a current events and history quiz in song, composed by saxophonist Allen Lowe. Inspired by Duke Ellington’s 1930s composition “Black, Brown, and Beige,” it represents a cross-section of American musical and social history, a fusion of freedom and constriction, slavery and liberation. It is a tone poem in many parts about gay nightlife in Harlem, African American entrepreneurs, slave rebellions, white flight, transsexual liberation,  suburban mirrors, Jaki Byard, Charles Mingus, Zora Neale Hurston, immigrants, congress, the stock market, culture, and the Washington Monument.

Lowe also plans to debut elelements of “something called ‘A Love Supine,’ which is my Dixieland version of John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme,’ a map of early jazz modernism and the hidden history of the mainstream avant garde.” He expects to be playing the intro to the first movement, called “Prequel and Feud,” in which “we re-live the internecine battles of jazz and build to the first movement, called: ‘Anti-Jazz’ (which was the battle cry of those who saw Trane/Ornette/Dolphy as false flag modernists).”

The Fake Music Ensemble is Allen Lowe (alto saxophone), Herb Wilson (tenor saxophone), Kevin Ray (bass), Christopher Morrison (guitar), Vance Provey (trumpet), and Rob Landis (drums).

Lowe was a founder of the New Haven Jazz Festival in the 1990s. As a saxophonist and composer in the 1980s and ’90s, he recorded and performed with Julius Hemphill, Don Byron, David Murray, Doc Cheatham, Roswell Rudd, Loren Schoenberg, Jimmy Knepper, Randy Sandke and others. His efforts—be they musical or musicological—have been hailed by rock critic Greil Marcus, jazz critic Francis Davis, composer Anthony Braxton and jazz historian John Szwed.

Lowe recently returned to the New Haven area after a two-decade exile in what he experienced as the cultural wasteland of Portland, Maine. (He titled his 2006 recording “Jews in Hell.”)

In the middle of last decade, Lowe began recording again, often accompanied by such luminaries as pianist Matthew Shipp, guitarist Mark Ribot and trombonist Roswell Rudd. And, immersed in vernacular American music forms, he wrote and compiled historical studies of American pop music (American Pop from Minstrel to Mojo), jazz (That Devilin’ Tune: A Jazz History 1900-1950), the blues (Really the Blues? A Blues History, 1893-1959) and rock ‘n’ roll (God Didn’t Like It: Electric Hillbillies, Singing Preachers, and the Beginning of Rock and Roll, 1950-1970).

Music: Big Fat Combo crank up the rock ‘n’ roll Thurs., Apr. 20

One of the most popular bands to play the Best Video Performance Space, the Big Fat Combo return on Thursday, Apr. 20, for their first appearance here since May, 2015. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The Big Fat Combo hail from Cheshire and offer their own, wry, well-crafted take on rock ‘n’ roll. The quartet is a classic rockabilly group: upright bass and drums, rhythm and lead guitar. Led by singer Tom Hearn, the Big Fat Combo not only play their original tunes (“Tag Sale,” “Banned by Sam the Clam’s” and “Chicks Dig it,” among others) but also riff on classic rock ‘n’ roll, garage rock, punk, country and even some easy listening chestnuts (“Que Sera Sera,” “It was a Very Good Year”) that they make fully their own.

The Big Fat Combo released their first compact disc, “Chicks Dig it,” in 2010. Check out their cover of Eydie Gorme’s “Blame It On the Bossa Nova,” performed at Best Video Performance Space in 2012 and captured on video by Dave Kelsey:
